Tuna has been a popular choice when it comes to food for Cats, and our feline friends are known to Fish. However, there has been many disputes over actual benefits in Tuna, could it actually do more harm than good for these kitties? Through Veterinary studies and research over the years, these are the pros and cons of feeding Tuna to your purrfect companion.

In general, Tuna consists of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory benefits which helps to decrease amounts of toxins in a Cat, and Omega 3 Fatty acids that generates a much more active and energetic kitty. Last but not least, Vitamins B12, C , Iron and Potassium found in Tuna can give a Cat’s immune system a healthy pick-up and also promote better blood circulation!

As we did our research, we realised that most of the dangers in feeding Tuna to your Cats actually contradict their benefits, risk factors such as:

Mercury Poisoning – High amounts of Mercury in Tuna fish

Yellow Fat Disease – (Vit E Deficiency) Lack thereof in Tuna-only diet, causes inflammation of Fatty tissues and cells

Decreases Energy – Excessive Unsaturated Fat content

While all that is not to say your Cat shouldn’t be eating Tuna, for it has nutritional values a Cat may require! Experts have advised to include fresh tuna in a Cat’s diet, but with close moderation and small amounts. 

The rule of thumb is about a teaspoon per Cat, two or three times a week. Tuna should never be fed alone as a meal, but instead, combined with a staple amount of premium dry food. Also avoid processed Tuna if you can, to keep unnecessary preservatives away from your Cat’s diet.
