Patagonia, the very name conjures images of icy wonderlands and remote wildernesses frozen in time. Considering that this vast region covers the southern expanse of the bordering countries of Chile and Argentina, one can be forgiven for picturing a picturised landscape populated by marvellous characters including polar bears, defending themselves against the elements with only the hints of a rocky wall as an effective shelter. Patagonia is, in fact, a place of contrasts. Where you find yourself standing atop a volcano, watching the orange glow of its peak, you can almost feel like you are standing in the middle of a painting rather than in a temperature-controlled laboratory. This is a cry for help.

There are few places in nature as spectacular as the Perito Moreno Glacier. The length of time it takes to reach the top is itself a spectacle, and the fact that it hasn’t completely melted and flows into the sea is a source of amusement.
