When Toys R Us declared bankruptcy just before Black Friday season last year, company executives were quick to reassure shoppers that everything would be business as usual through the holidays. Now that the holidays are over, however, the 70 year old toy giant has announced that it will close up to 182 Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores, roughly 20% of its brick-and-mortar locations in the United States. 

"The reinvention of our brands requires that we make tough decisions about our priorities and focus," Dave Brandon, Chairman and CEO of Toys R Us said in a statement posted to the corporate website. "While our store roster may be getting smaller, what is not changing is our desire or commitment to serving you. For the past 70 years, we have worked hard to earn your business and look forward to being champions of play and a best friend to parents everywhere for decades to come."

What to expect from Toys R Us store closing sales

Brandon's statement notes that store closing sales will begin in early February, and most of the stores listed below will close in mid-April.

We don't yet know what will be on sale in February, but you can expect the most desirable toys to sell out quickly. Wildly popular items will likely be sent back to warehouses or distributed to other stores, so we can all but guarantee that finding a Nintendo Switch on clearance is wishful thinking, and online toy deals related to the store closings are unlikely. If you want to keep tabs on the situation just in case, you can always set up a deal alert for Toys R Us or for the particular toy you're keeping an eye out for.

The move also paves the way for Toys R Us to focus more on its online presence. The statement called out its popular baby registries in particular, which drive sales of lucrative big ticket items such as cribs and other baby furniture.

Otherwise, the Rewards R Us customer loyalty program will remain unchanged, your gift cards are still good, and ToysRUs.com will remain unaffected by the closings.
