The Navratri Festival

Navratri is a nine day Hindu festival – celebrated twice each year in India. It is celebrated differently in various parts of the country. These 9 days are separated as a set of 3 days each. Each day is devoted to the nine incarnations of Maa Durga. Navratri that is celebrated during the month of March/April is called Chaitra Navratri.

The nine days of Navratri are very significant in keeping alive the rich folk traditions of India. In Navratri, one celebrates the power, intellect and wealth of Maa Durga. Hence, the 9 days are segregated into 3-day sets to honour Maa Durga, Maa Lakshmi and Maa Saraswati, respectively. The serene, yet powerful, rituals during the nine days are complemented by rich and vibrant festivities. The nine days are believed to assure protection and healing from any destructive force.

With proper fasting, rituals and self-discipline, every devotee’s wishes are believed to be fulfilled. Devotees need to abstain from regular table salt and instead use sea salt (sendha) in cooking. The food eaten during the nine days of Navratri are fried or boiled potatoes, banana chips, lassi, curd, fruits and fruit juices, sabudana kheer, aloo sabzi, etc.

Celebrations include stage decorations, enactments of folklore, chanting of scriptures, garba dance and Dandiya night. Cultural fanfare is visible with patterned pandals and classical folk dances. On the final day, i.e. Vijayadashami or Dussehra, the statues symbolizing the evil are burnt with fireworks marking end of evil. The festival also starts the preparation for one of India’s most important and widely celebrated festival of Diwali which is celebrated 20 days after Dussehra.
