What You Need to Make Tesseract Cupcakes

I am not a ‘bake from scratch’ kinda girl. In fact, the easier a recipe is, the more likely I am to actually follow it. We found all of these supplies at Wal-Mart with the exception of the rock candy which is from Party City. Here is what you’ll need:

  • White Cake Mix
  • Blue Funfetti Cake Mix
  • White Frosting
  • Cupcake Liners (metallic blue fit the theme perfectly)
  • Eggs, Vegetable Oil, Water (per cake mix recipe)
  • Cooking Spray
  • Rock Candy
  • Pop Rocks (for an extra punch)

Making the Cupcakes

These mixes were super easy to make and fun for my daughters to ‘help’ with. I may have spent most of the time picking out egg shells and cleaning up their messes, but hey memories right?

Begin by making the white cake mix first and filling the cupcake liners half way. Next you’ll mix up the blue Funfetti mix and add a tablespoon of the blue onto the white. Using a toothpick, swirl the blue into the white cake mix. This will give you a fun swirled look on the inside of the cupcake once baked. Bake per the box instructions.

Finishing the Tesseract Cupcakes

Once the cupcakes are baked, throw them into the freezer/fridge to cool. Or as my three year old called it, the “Blast Chiller”. I think she has been watching too many cake videos on YouTube. Next, grab some blue food coloring and mix it into the icing. I used the Neon color kit show below to make it super bright. Finally, you’ll want to crush up the rock candy. I crumbled most of the sticks into a Ziploc bag to keep it a little cleaner.

Spread the icing and then sprinkle rock candy crystals across the top. You can also add a little sprinkle of pop rocks to give them an extra POP.
