Midwife Appointment

We had our Midwife Appointment on Thursday when I was 23+6 days. She said I will have 1 more monthly appointment at 27+6days and then on it will be fortnightly appointments.

When I think that I only have 1 more monthly appointment it really makes it seem like time is going fast.

It does feel like a long time ago that I was desperate to get past the 12 week mark.

But, gee…

16 weeks to go…

One of the main things my midwife talked to us about was viability. She said the 24 week mark is when babies can be viable if for some reason my waters were to break and go into labor.

She talked about how at any moment my waters could break for no reason (talk about putting the fear into a woman! Should I pack a spare set of clothes with me wherever I go?! I am not going to be nervous every time I go out into public). She also added that infections; such as, a tooth Infection, chest infection, sinus infection and UTI, needs to be seen to as soon as possible. I instantly start scanning my body for potential threats. Infections can pass through the placenta and get to the baby if left untreated. This can lead to an early labor.

She must have thought I was very silly I asked “does the baby constantly move around and change which way she’s laying until eventually she’s too big and hopefully she’s laying head down and she will stay that way until birth?”

She went on to explain that they baby is not this tiny little thing floating around in this massive balloon of water. She explain that there are little pockets of water in the uterus and it’s pretty cozy in there no matter how big or small the baby is…

I wanted to crawl under a rock. I must have sounded so stupid. O well. She’s the person to ask these questions to.

We also got to hear her heartbeat which the midwife was very happy with and she felt around my tummy and said she is growing nicely. I also had to pee on a stick came back fine and I had my heartrate taken which was good too.

I have gained 5kgs!! Which was a shock to me because it doesn’t feel that long ago that I weighed myself and was only just getting back to my pre-pregnancy weight (I lost a 4ish KGs during the first 12 weeks because I was vomiting everything up and had ZERO appetite). Apparently it is normal to gain between 11kgs and 16kgs during pregnancy.

I have to book in and do the glucose test to check for gestational diabetes between 26 and 27 weeks. I am not looking forward to that. I hear the drink tastes gross and you have to sit around for an hour. I shouldn’t complain though, it’s all to check and make sure everything is going well.
