Generation Girl Barbie

The Generation Girl line, like dolls before and since, was centred around an imaginary high school. The six characters at launch all came from different countries, converging at International High School in New York. The idea was supplemented with the mini print magazines issued with the dolls, and the ezine run on the Generation Girl website.

The second wave introduced two new characters, Blaine Gordon from New York and Mari Nakano from Tokyo. Wave three was one of my favourite Barbie moves of all time - each doll came with its own bedroom set. After that the line came to an end, Mattel going back to the drawing board to find a suitable reboot to do battle with MGA's new Bratz dolls...

The launch wave consisted of six dolls, with Lara, Tori and Marissa being renamed Marie, Vicky and Ana, respectively, for some territories. The dolls quickly courted controversy because - shock gasp horror - Barbie had an ankle tattoo, Chelsie came with a nose stud, and Tori had no less than three earrings in her left ear.

Mattel caved within days and reissued dolls lost the offending features.
