Falling in elderly relatives: Catching my mum before she falls

Last week, I wrote about seeing the advancing frailty of my own mum as the cruel thing that is the inevitable aging process tightened its grip on her life.  Before that, last year, she had a succession of falls and when I’m not battling my way through motherhood, my thoughts are literally consantly buzzing with fears of another Fall. Will she fall again? How will she fall? When will she fall? How serious will the fall be? How will she reach me when she falls?

The bottom line is…I don’t want her to fall, I want to catch her before she falls. I know another fall is likely to be the straw that breaks the camels back in terms of health and independence for her.

We have since had numerous conversations about the dangers of falling but somehow despite me being on absolute tenterhooks about the probability of it happening again, they don’t seem to be translating into action. Perhaps I am just being too soft and need to go in all guns blazing and make some changes?

We have been looking into various fall alarms, I have banned the use of her shopping trolley which ended up being a massive culprit in the falls sending her off balance, we have concluded now that escalators are now absolutely out of the equation and that stairs are always taken uber cautiously and hand rails are always held. I have even gone so far as to looking into wet room costs to ensure her bathroom is more accessible.

But ultimately, my mum is resistant to change and so far, we haven’t managed to implement any of the above and so just like every day that went before this one, I wonder…if catching my mum before she falls again is within my power. I very much hope for her sake that it is.

Do you worry about an elderly relative falling? Have you found making changes to help prevent falls difficult? Please leave a comment and share below.
