We have been learning about Penguins this past week so I was keen to set up a tuff spot for the Children to play with their penguins on. I was thinking of ideas on how to make Snow (for our Penguin Tuff Spot), which isn’t in great supply naturally in August time and thought I would share my five ideas for home made snow.
this is an old favourite for sensory play and it produces a wonderfully soft product. To make Cloud Dough simply add 1 part baby oil to four parts flour. I tend to do a cup of flour and 1/4 cup of baby oil. The result is a silky powdery product which will mould together and then return to powder.
Quick and easy – add shredded paper as a different sensory experience. You could also mix with white feathers or pieces of felt and fabric to get a mixture of textures in there.
This was the most realistic looking snow that I made and was simply made using shaving foam and bicarbonate of soda. I used 500g of Bicarbonate of soda to produce a modest amount and there was no real measurement with the shaving foam – just a healthy squirt and mix it up until it resembles snow. I also added silver glitter in with this to give it a nice sparkle. Mr D in particular enjoyed playing with this one.
Cotton wool is a fab way to make snow – you can stretch it out to cover play scenes or roll up to make snow balls.
You could make some white playdough. I made a quick playdough mixing cornflour and conditioner together. I used a cheap coconut scented conditioner (to keep it white). Pop a cup of cornflour into a bowl and add the conditioner slowly, mixing and kneading it together, adding more as required. I like this quick recipe as by adding more conditioner you can make the dough stickier. We used our playdough to make snow covered land for the penguins to sit on.
When making your cloud dough, play doh or play snow you can add scents and glitter to them to give them another sensory element. My children loved guessing the scent of the play doh.
Ways to extend Learning:
- Ask the children to describe the snow you have provided eg: texture, scent, how it looks.
- Ask the children if they remember playing in the snow. how did it feel? did they get wet? What games did they play in the snow?
- Encourage the children to experiment with the snow, offer tools such as spoons, scoops, cups and bowls for the children to fill and empty
- Add small world toys; some that are natural to snow (eg: polar bear, penguin) and others that aren’t (elephant, Lion).
- Separate the snow into different piles and ask the children to put the biggest animal with the biggest pile
- Talk about snowy parts of the world eg: Antarctica and share age appropriate maps and atlases and other books
- Encourage the children to talk about what they would need to wear if playing in real snow
