Um, my daughter hasn’t even left yet, but I’m already working on a care package to Send to College. After realizing how much stuff we actually had to bring for her to make it through an entire semester, I figured it was just easier to make some care packages that I could send while she was there. It would be a little bit of something from home, a little bit of something she needs, and a little bit less I had to drop off with her. Thank you, Mr. Mailman for making my life easier!

In the first care package, I put the standard items – shampoo, conditioner, candy, gift cards, a little bit of cash, and her favorite things. I also added some Schick Hydro Silk razors. She really likes that kind. No one wants to spend a lot of time in the dorm showers. Let’s just say that the showers offer little in the privacy department. It’s basically a scene from a college horror movie. A bunch of strangers separated by curtains. So she likes the convenience of the disposable razors. They’re convenient, they moisturize her skin, and she just throws them out after a few uses. Less time in the dorm shower makes for a happy college student.

Having fresh and clean legs makes her feel better as a person too – it’s a self confidence booster that doesn’t take a lot of time. And since we live in California, she’ll be wearing shorts and skirts for quite a while longer, so the easier it is to shave and go, the better. It leaves her more time for studying (or calling Mom!)

I think I’ll probably make a few of these packages, so that I can send them to her at least once a month, and for times when she’ll need them the most. She’ll be home for the “big” holidays, like Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I want to send her a care package for her birthday, midterm survival, finals survival, and something fun for Halloween. When I was at college, I really liked getting the care packages in the mail. It made me a little less homesick.

Now that I’ve finally accepted that my daughter is technically an adult, I’m starting to get excited about it. I’m still not looking forward to the part where I won’t see her shining face every day, but I know she’s growing into a confident woman that has a bright future ahead of her. So even on the hardest days, I keep that in mind and it makes me smile. I’m glad I get to be a part of this journey.
