When you’re expecting, one of the likely things you’re going to do is to make a list of possible names before picking one of them (perhaps one for each gender as you don’t know what you’re having). Often, your list will comprise of familiar names of people you know, whether they’re friends or family, or someone famous. And these names are of people who come dime a dozen.

Your child is going to be special, so he/she is going to need a special name. That’s when you look back at history and think of all the names that you’ve heard of but have never known someone by a name on the list in particular.

Recent speculation has it that there is going to be a resurgence of quite a few vintage names. For instance, calling your daughter Bessie, which is an old name, won’t necessarily mean that she’s an old maid. The list boasts quite a few names that belonged to famous people of the past. Etta, for example, is on the list, and who can forget Etta James (or, for that matter, her voice). With six Grammy Awards and 17 Blues Music Awards, who wouldn’t want her as a daughter’s namesake (1)? Agatha is another example, and we can all think of one person who’s called Agatha: Agatha Christie, one of the greatest and most prolific crime writers of the 20th century.

The TV Show “How I Met Your Mother” has already made the name Barney quite popular, so that is definitely going to see a comeback. Chester Bennington, who recently died, known for his amazing voice, also has a name that isn’t quite popular at the moment, but we’ll soon see a return to popularity (2). Cleveland is already known in common parlance as it is the name of one of the main characters of the TV show “Family Guy”. We notice here how much of an impact television has on our acquaintance with different names. Then, there are sports to look up to as well, what with a former Manchester United and England player being called Ferdinand.

So these names are not names from centuries ago, but just names that went out of fashion probably just a few decades ago. And, with parents falling short of choices and ending up naming their children the same old John, or Jack, a unique name is definitely the need of the hour.

Here’s the complete list of names which we think will probably witness a resurgence soon:
