Butterbeer for Underage Wizards (and a Butterbeer Recipe for Their Parents)

We’re huge Harry Potter nerds fans in my house.  My boys have all taken at least one turn of dressing up like Harry Potter for Halloween. We have various Harry Potter gear, have been to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter for the past three summers, and I even played Harry Potter trivia with a group of friends this past week.

So of course we need to celebrate Harry Potter’s birthday this weekend.

Ever since I first read the Harry Potter books, I was curious about what the various candies and drinks they consumed would taste like. Thanks to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, we actually got to try quite a few of them, including Butterbeer.

Butterbeer is actually pretty easy to replicate at home. It comes in fizzy or frozen. Since my boys like fizzy the best, that’s the one we made. First, I’ll give you my simple butterbeer recipe for underage wizards and then my version of the grown-up spiked butterbeer.

Butterbeer Recipe for Kids, Underage Wizards, and Adults Soon Flying on Broomsticks

  • 12oz cream soda
  • 2 tablespoons butterscotch syrup

Pour cream soda and Butterscotch Syrup over ice in a shaker. Shake to combine and pour through the strainer into a glass.

A note about the topping: when you order Butterbeer at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, there’s this foamy, pretty top. This version doesn’t give you that, but it does give you the same flavor. We tried, after looking at other recipes, to mix marshmallow fluff with some butterscotch syrup and put that on top, which is what you see here. But none of my boys liked it. We all agreed that a better option might be some whipped cream or Cool Whip mixed with butterscotch syrup. I’ll try that soon and update here. This goes for the kids’ version of Butterbeer and the adult. Though it’s just as tasty without any topping: the topping is more for a pretty picture than anything else.

In case you’re wondering, we got our Butterbeer glasses in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
