I have been a bit of an Essential Oils skeptic.
I completely blame my mother for having me swallow tea tree oil when I was a teen- I don’t care how big of an oils fan you are, that stuff does not taste good. Okay, I really don’t blame her, but it was not the best intro to oils… she was way ahead of her time with things like this, since that was 25+ years ago.
I do love essential oils when it comes to things like sugar scrubs or bath salts. Some of them smell amazing and my 8 year old is convinced that the Bedtime blend I have makes him go right to sleep, so I’ll definitely take that!
This week, I was pretty ill (thanks for going back to school and bringing germs back home, kids) and I had to ask friends for suggestions on how to actually use the essential oils I have. I’ll admit that I do feel like I breathed a little easier after using a eucalyptus and lemon blend. I’m far from an oils expert but I can share the yoga mat cleaner I made (recipe from one of my yoga instructors, along with the suggestions for oil combinations) – because while I won’t make any claims about the effects of the essential oils, it does clean my yoga mat and keep it smelling good… and maybe as I experiment more with oils, I’ll have more of an opinion on what oils should be used in what combinations, but these work for now!
DIY Yoga Mat Cleaner
- 3 oz water
- 1 oz witch hazel
- 20 (ish) drops essential oils
Oil combination suggestions:
- 10 orange, 5 lavender, 6 lemon (this is the one I made)
- 10 lavender, 10 tea tree, 5 eucalyptus
- 10 peppermint, 10 lavender, 5 lemon
I used these amounts because I have a 4 oz spray bottle, which I picked up in the beauty section of Target. There are prettier glass bottles, but I wanted something I could throw in my bag and not worry about it breaking. I added some washi tape to my bottle to make it a little prettier (and so I’d remember what the bottle was). You can find witch hazel in the beauty section (where it was in the more hipster grocery store near me) or near the hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol (where I found it in CVS for a much better price).
