A family is looking for answers after their 23-week premature Baby, who was termed dead by delivery doctors and boxed up for two hours was found breathing earlier this week.

The pregnant mom was reportedly admitted to the Hospital with stomach pain. She delivered the baby, but because she was only 23 weeks they considered the delivery an aborted baby. A senior doctor at the hospital said they attempted to rescuitate the baby but was unsuccessful.

Declared dead, the 490gram girl was wrapped in a yellow cardboard box and handed over to the family members.

However, when they arrived home they noticed that the baby was still breathing and moving and immediately rushed back to the hospital.

At that point the hospital refused to re-admit the baby. Following a protest from the family police had to intervene. The matter was resolved between the family and the hospital authorities, with the baby being readmitted.

The hospital said, ‘the baby girl is now at pediatrics ICU under ventilator support in ICU’. As of now, she is still alive but in critical condition.

Hospital medical director Dr. Suresh Kumar told the media, “Initially the aborted pre-term fetus did not show any sign of life. Later after a family member brought the box to us the 23-week fetus, we admitted it. However, under what circumstances such an incident took place would be investigated and appropriate action would be taken after the investigation. A report has been sought within 24 hours.”

“There is a special team of doctors who are keeping a close watch on the baby and treating her”, the director states.

This is not the first time this has happened to a preterm baby. Often their breathing is so shallow that doctors are unable to detect they are alive.

In terms of prematurity, this baby was not the smallest. Doctors around the world have saved many born under 300grams. Hopefully this baby will now have her chance to grow and thrive.
