A Letter To My First Born, As You Become a Big Brother

Dear Branden,

Your Dad and I brought you into this world one week past your due date on September 27th, 2008. Strong willed from the start, you did not want to enter the world until you were good and ready. You were delivered by the on-call doctor, who left in the middle of your birth to attend a black tie wedding . Whenever he returned, I was ready to push and he delivered you in his tuxedo (you can’t make this stuff up!). We knew from that moment on that you would be a fancy little guy who loves to steal the show whenever possible.

I’ve watched you grow every single day. I am truly amazed the way you look at the world and help me see things through your eyes. The strong personalty that you have developed reminds me so much of mine – which is probably why we bicker the way that we do. I remember all of your firsts and can still pick your little laugh out of a busy New York City crowed.

This week, we are waiting for your little sister’s arrival and couldn’t be more excited to welcome her into our tiny family and complete it. You are going to be an amazing Big Brother in every single way imaginable because you have waited for this moment for so long.

But I want you to know how special you alone are to me and that while it might take some balancing on Mommy and Daddy’s parts – we will always do our very best to make sure you know that each and every day. For the longest time, it has been the three of us, and now we will be four – but we will never forget all the moments that we have had watching you explore the world. After all, you came into the world and taught us how to be parents. You tested our will and our patience, our ability to go long stretches of time without sleep, and in many occasions – laugh until we cried.

I know that you were Born to be many great things and do many great things, and being a big Brother is definitely on that list. You may not realize it now, but this whole big brother thing is a big deal and your sister is going to look up to you in more ways than you may every understand, so make sure to take that seriously. You are going to be her hero, her playmate, her role model and her best friend. She is so lucky to have you to fill those shoes for her.

I love you more than words can describe or I could ever say, but I am truly blessed to be your mom.

Love Always,

Mom
