College is meant to be a fantastic time for young students, as it gives them the chance to focus their studies on one single subject that they thrive in. It’s also a great time for self-discovery as it gives young adults the chance to figure out the adult world before they head off into a life of full-time employment. Not only that, though, but it is also a whole lot of fun!

Unfortunately, though, not every student ends up having a good time at college. For some, it can end up being quite a dark time that is plagued with a lot of stress and mental health-related worries. I went to college with two young kids and a part-time job, so I know all about being overwhelmed.  To ensure you perform your best at college and don’t struggle too much with your mental health, follow these great tips.

Eat Well

Firstly, it is important that you emphasize the importance of eating well while you are away at college. You need to eat regularly to keep your energy levels up, and it needs to be a wide variety of healthy and nutritious foods. It’s also beneficial for you to limit your alcohol and caffeine intake, as these can trigger stress.

Don’t Take On Too Much

Once you arrive at college, you will find that you have busy schedules filled with various lectures, classes, and seminars. So, it’s important that you don’t end up taking on too much by taking a time consuming part-time job or trying to lead a full social life. If you do, you will end up burning out and might suffer from stress and exhaustion. As you are at college to study and work towards your qualifications first.

Get Professional Help When Needed

You also need to be aware of the signs that your mental health may be declining. Once you get all the help you need, you will be able to start the necessary treatment or therapy that you may need to get back on track. Remember, there is nothing wrong with asking for help.

For instance, quite a few charities that work to improve Mental Health have lots of great guides and how-tos on their websites. There are also some free resources that can help you practice mindfulness. This thinking exercise has been linked to improving individuals’ mental health.

Make Friends

You should also try to make as many friends as possible once you get to college. This will help you create a network that you can reach out to whenever you need any support or even if you just need to talk to someone. Plus, study groups can be fun and extremely helpful in preparing for those exams.
