10 Reasons You Need to Attend a Homeschool Conference

The Homeschool Conference — the yearly event across the country that causes murmurings among all of your homeschool friends. What will be the latest line up of speakers? Which curriculum are your friends buying? Who gets a free pass for the day without their children? It is all too easy to shrug off and decide at the last minute if you are or are not going to attend. However, attending one of these conferences is such a crucial component to the life of a homeschool mom that you should know there are at least 10 reasons you NEED to attend a homeschool conference.

10 Reasons You Need to Attend a Homeschool Conference

You need the encouragement.

In the mundane day to day occurrences of homeschooling, it can be very easy to forget why you are doing this in the first place. When we forget the “why” it is easy to get discouraged.

You need the camaraderie.

Sitting in a breakout session or a workshop with hundreds of other homeschooling parents feels amazing. Knowing that you are all in this together does wonders for a person’s sense of purpose.

You need the discounts.

When you buy curriculum it can cost you a pretty penny, you want to be sure you are getting the best deal. When you buy at a conference you often walk away with your books or with free shipping for books that will arrive at your home. Sometimes, there are even conference specials and markdowns available.

You need to get excited again.

When you see all the new items, the fun activities, and the innovative manipulatives, it gets you excited about this homeschooling thing all over again.

You need to get hubby on board.

Let’s face it, often times it is a mom who does most of the schooling and sometimes dads are blissfully unaware of what it takes. Having your hubby with you gives him a firsthand view of what you need, what you like, and new ideas for how to help.

You need new ideas.

We all get stale over time, sometimes just passing by the boy’s adventure booths or the new science curriculum offered by an entrepreneurial parent is just the creative inspiration you need.

You need to touch and see.

It is one thing to see curriculum online and read about its rave reviews. It’s a different realm when you can see it, touch it, and flip through it. What a great way to decide if it is a good fit for your family.

You need to feel included.

There is nothing better than being around people who share your vision for homeschooling. They also don’t see homeschooling as an affront to their own educational choices. The people you see and chat with all have the same goal in mind, educating their children at home.

You need the extras.

Extra manipulatives, crosswords, games, toys, educational “stuff” you need it all.

You need to gain insights.

When you attend workshops you gain insight into the thought processes used by the creators. You also understand what kinds of learners best benefit from which curriculums. When you’re able to meet the authors, you may get specialized advice in helping your child succeed.
