 Sore and cracked Nipples during breastfeeding are a common occurrence. Most mothers suffer from it silently and many opt to give the bottle to the baby to recover from the soreness. This at times could lead to nipple confusion in babies when the mother resumes breastfeeding. So, it is necessary that a mother tries some remedies to heal the nipples faster and get going with smooth breastfeeding. Many mothers don’t like to use medicated creams on the nipples fearing it might harm the baby during feeding.

Cracked nipples, Sore Nipples, engorgement is common for breastfeeding mothers. But the pain of these breastfeeding niggles is almost unbearable. Nipple pain and damage in breastfeeding mothers are common causes of premature breastfeeding cessation.  Many mothers plan to give up breastfeeding when it becomes too much to bear and turn to formula. But we all know that formula milk isn’t as good as breast milk and in many ways not the best choice of nutrition for your child. But if sore and cracked nipples are stopping you from having a smooth breastfeeding experience, then try some remedies to get rid of the same.

There are various home remedies that can help you in this case:

1. Peppermint

The leaves, gel and even peppermint water do a lot to soothe the sore nipples and help a mother carry on with breastfeeding. There are numerous studies that confirm the fact that peppermint can be a life saviour for breastfeeding mothers.The following studies conclude that peppermint stands to be an excellent natural remedy for sore and cracked nipples in breastfeeding mothers.

  • A study conducted in the 2014 and published in the Journal of research of medical sciences showed that women who put four drops of menthol on their sore and cracked nipples and areola after breastfeeding experienced fewer incidences of nipple crack and soreness as compared to women who used their own milk to treat the condition.
  • Women who used peppermint gels on their nipples as compared to the ones who used lanolin ointment or placebo had fewer nipple cracks and also mastered better breastfeeding techniques due to fewer problems faced in the nipple area and areola. 
  • Another study found out that women who used peppermint water on their breasts saw fewer chances of developing nipple cracks than women who didn’t use this water. Also, these women faced less nipple pain during breastfeeding.

How to prepare peppermint water?

To prepare peppermint water, soak some peppermint leaves in water overnight and next morning use this water after straining as a breast ointment or gel lathering it all over the nipples and areola.

2. Breast milk:

This is the easiest way to deal with cracked and sore nipples. Just press your breast and hand express a little bit of your milk and apply it in the affected areas. Allow it to dry. Breast milk has a lot of antibodies and helps to heal the nipples soon. For best result apply it between two feeds so your nipples have enough time to recover.

3. Cream of milk:

This is the malai of the regular milk which works in the same way as breast milk. Apply the malai over the affected areas and leave it to dry. Before you offer a feed to your child wash your nipples with lukewarm water.

4. Aloe vera:

Aloe vera has numerous healing properties. Cut open a leaf and squeeze out a little amount of gel. Apply the gel generously over the cracked and sore nipples and allow it to dry. Before feeding your baby wash off your nipples with warm water and pat dry. Apply this gel for three to four times till your nipples heal.

5. Warm tea bags:

The chamomile tea bags come very handy while treating sore nipples. Dip two tea bags in warm water. Squeeze the water out and put the bags over the cracked areas and rest. Chamomile has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties which help to heal the skin faster.

6. Basil leaves:

Better known as tulsi leaves they come to rescue for various skin problems and help a lactating mother recover from sore nipples too. Crush some leaves in a bowl and make a paste of tulsi leaves. Apply the paste to the cracked area and allow it to heal. Apply this paste at least three to four times in a day. Wash off before offering your baby a feed.
