‘Cancer’ even the name has the power make a chill run down the spine. It doesn’t have any easy cure but chemotherapy and advancement of science and technology has given a ray of hope to people and also to help them get mentally prepared. There are several Bollywood celebrities who have surrender to the disease, battled with it and emerged victorious. These celebrities are not only our on-screen idols but are also our off-screen inspiration. Ahead of Cancer Survivors Day, we bring to you a list of five Bollywood celebrities who battled cancer.
Now the face of ‘Insight Vacations’, Lisa Ray was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma – a cancer of plasma cells – in 2009. On Christmas in 2009, she was successfully treated with stem cell transplant. During the treatment she kept mum, she talked about it openly only after she was fully recovered a year later in April 2010. She has initiated fundraisers and campaigns for Multiple Myeloma including the ‘Because I’m a Girl’ campaign. Ray also launched ‘Make Myeloma Matter’ media campaign that helps to raise awareness worldwide.

In 2004, director of ‘Barfi’, Anurag Basu was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic Leukemia, a type of blood cancer. Doctors gave him a verdict of two months but rather getting pessimistic he fought the disease for two years. The disease didn’t shake his spirit and he continued his work from his hospital bed. You will be surprised to know that the scripts of ‘Life in a Metro’ and ‘Gangster’ were written from his hospital bed.
The 46-year-old ‘Dil Se’ actress was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2012. Despite being an actress she boldly posted pictures of herself during Chemotherapy from the New York hospital. She kept her fans updated about her condition. Post her recovery while addressing a session she expressed how cancer helps to transform a person and how it has helped her to appreciate life and honor the body.
Tamil actress Gautami was diagnosed with Breast Cancer at the age of 35. She has acted in several Hindi films including Pyar Hua chori chori, Janata ki Adalat, Haiwan, Admi, Appoo Raja, Trimurti, and Dhaal. During her treatment she was going through the most lonely phase of her life. It is said that actor Kamal Hassan stood by her during the phase helped her to fight the disease. She now leads a peaceful life with Kamal Hassan.
Namrata Singh Gujral
Indian-American actress Namrata Singh Gujral who has acted in Bollywood film ‘Kaante’ was diagnosed with early stages of breast cancer in 2008 and had to undergo chemotherapy. In 2013, she was treated for Burkitt’s Lymphoma. She did not take the battle lying down and recovered from both the cancers in 2013. Later she directed a docu-drama titled ‘1 a Minute’ that features women affected by breast cancer. The film was screened in 600 theatres and is considered to be the largest release for a cancer-related movie.
