5 Potential Complications From Ear Piercing
1. Allergic Reactions
Allergic reactions to metals in the earring can cause the baby’s earlobe to get infected. Nickel is typically the most common metal which gives allergic reactions. Before you decide to pierce your baby’s ears, it is important to choose nickel-free Earrings. Some of the other metals recommended for babies are surgical steel and 14 karat gold.
2. Infections
Once the Ear Piercing is done, watch out for possible signs of infection. The most common problem after ear piercing is infections. Ear lobes can get infected if the equipment used was not sterile, earrings used were dirty, or if the studs are clasped too tightly. Rub alcohol and antibiotic ointment at least twice a day on your baby’s ears to keep it clean. Contact the doctor if you feel it’s too red, the baby develops fever or pus formation around the piercing.
3. Tear In The Earlobe
If your love for danglers and hooped earrings makes you pierce one on your baby’s ears, we would say it is not right or a good idea. The risk of tear is very high as your baby might catch hold of the earrings and pull it. Be sure to use only stud earrings for your baby or young kid.
4. Keloid Formation
Keloids are generally genetic. The body tries to heal the area of trauma after the ears are pierced. When the body over-defends and goes beyond limits, it leads to a large scar tissue or keloid. It can be removed surgically.
5. Choking Hazard
While you get the studs for your baby, make sure to get the ones which do not fall out easily after piercing. Babies are curious to touch and play with these small things. They are highly vulnerable to get choked by the earrings if they put it in their mouth. Always be vigilant and call the doctor if you find any redness or any tenderness around the area.
