Konkona Sen Sharma spills the beans on breastfeeding, parenting and more!

We all know her as the gorgeous girl-next-door from Wake Up Sid! From her sassy wardrobe to the cute little room she lived in, Aisha Banerjee (Konkona) grabbed eyes for more than just one reason and ever since then, she hasn’t looked back.

Today, this gorgeous actress is back in the limelight with yet another flick - A Death in the Gunj. Work aside, the glowing mom has a lot to say and admit about postpartum depression, motherhood, her Parenting style and more! Read on!

On what inspires her

Its women power all the way for this mommy! Like most other B-town ladies, Konkona is all for working mothers and it’s no surprise she derives inspiration from other working women around her.

“A happy person makes a happy Parent. So I feel everyone should find means to their happiness and fulfill their own dreams. No point being at home all day and not being present… like not engaging most of the time.”

On postpartum depression

Like for anyone else, the first few weeks post pregnancy was tough for her too. From being massively sleep deprived to crying in the dark for no reason, Konkona battled it all during her postpartum. So much so, that she even admits that it was not love at first sight with her son.

“It was not instant. I mean obviously, I loved him. But over a period of time, I learned I could love him so much more. Like there are newer depths of love you can achieve.”

On Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a bitter-sweet experience for most women and this holds true for Konkona too. Sore and bleeding nipples, the unending list of do’s and don’ts and finally, the nipple shield which is no new mom’s favourite accessory, all led to her having a stressful time. Nonetheless, she sailed through it all with grace!

On Parenting

A hater of helicopter parenting, Konkona believes in giving her kids space and letting them figure it all out. Her parents did that and she firmly believes that kids have a mind of their own and must be given a chance to develop their own space.

“There is no way to really describe it, except that it is the opposite of helicopter parenting. I just can’t see the merit in helicopter parenting.”

Plus being a celebrity’s son can bring along a whole lot of perks and Konkona clearly does not want her kids to dwell in that bubble.

“Like when we are sitting in a room, he is the only kid who is possibly jumping around or attracting attention. So I have to ask people to consciously look away,” she says.

On what parenting taught her

Like for most of us, Konkona also admits that being a mother, instilled patience. That aside, kids always have their own way of seeing things and that in turn taught her to view life from different perspectives.

“Being a parent has taught me to experience life from a different perspective altogether. Resilience, tenacity and patience- I never knew how much of these were built into me.”

Advice for moms

1. Children are raised by the community too. It’s important for the child to engage with house help and nannies. This will help them interact with different people at different levels.

2. You can engage with a child even when you aren’t actively talking to it. Like reading together. You can model the behaviour you would like your child to emulate.

3. It is worse to be at home all the time and being resentful. Instead, do things that are meaningful for you- whatever that may be- to make you a happier person.

There are no perfect parents, only real ones.
