Wildman In Kentucky

Before we knew them as sasquatch or bigfoot, or even called them gorilla, there were reports of Wildmen in the woods.

Deep Creek, Kentucky - May 1894.  In this rural area, people began reporting that something seemed to be stealing their chickens, eggs, young pigs, lambs and various other food items.

One morning, Eph Boston and his sons saw a creature heading to their barn. It was about 6 1/2 ft. tall, had clawed feet and cat-like hands. After entering, it then came out running, carrying three chickens. Tom Boston fired at it with his gun, but the creature escaped. They followed it to where it disappeared into a cave.

The Boston's gathered some neighbors and a while later returned to the cave. When they examined it, their found evidence that something had been living in the cave. There were bones and feathers near the entrance. After seeing this, most were afraid to go in much further.  Their decision was made for them when suddenly something, very close to them, gave an "unearthly yell" causing them to run from the cave.

All further efforts to capture or kill the creature failed, including trying to smoke it out of the cave.

Joseph Ewalt described this creature more fully. While interesting that we have his description of the creature, we have no further details of his encounter.

It had "great long white hair hanging down from his head and face...as coarse as a horse's mane."  He further reported that the legs were covered with hair and the only article of clothing the creature wore was a piece of sheepskin over its lower portion of body, reaching nearly to its knees. "A light came from his eyes and mouth similar to fire."
