Our Favorite Announcements from Google I/O ’18

Last week, Google published a list of 100 announcements they made at their massive annual I/O conference. Now, 100 is a pretty big number. Especially when it comes to cutting-edge information. But don’t worry folks. I rooted through each point and created a list of announcements I deemed worthy knowledge for marketers and small business owners. OK, Google!

Google has already blasted us into an artificially intelligent, voice-assisted world. At this years, I/O conference, they only furthered the powers of useful tech. Consumers and brands are already operating on a completely different playing field than they were 5 years ago. As times keep changing (rapidly), we must aim to stay on top of how we are processing and utilizing emerging information. Read on, and see why the way we use our phones is changing, as is how we shop, review, and compare.

What they announced:

We’re rolling out Multiple Actions so the Google Assistant can understand more complex queries like: “What’s the weather like in New York and in Austin?”

Why we love it:

This will help us to better utilize voice assistant technology. We will better understand how to optimize for voice search and learn what keywords people are using.

What they announced:

Families have listened to over 130,000 hours of children’s stories on the Assistant in the last two months alone.

Why we love it:

We’re starting to gather tons of voice search data. This will help us gather information about our audiences, monitor voice search trends, and set KPIs for our results.

What they announced:

Bon appetit! A new food pick-up and delivery experience for the Google Assistant app will be available later this year.

Why we love it:

This is great for local food businesses. It’s another way to gain exposure and join the AI worlds.

What they announced:

Google Duplex is a new capability we will be testing this summer within the Google Assistant to you help you make reservations, schedule appointments, and get holiday hours from businesses. Just provide the date and time, and your Assistant will call the business to coordinate details.

Why we love it:

People Love simple business transactions and communication. That’s why bots have been so successful. This is just another great way to interact with your company. So once that’s paired with great customer service they’ll be more likely to return as a customer.

What they announced:

Soon you’ll see Smart Compose in Gmail, a new feature powered by AI, that helps you save you time by cutting back on repetitive writing while reducing the chance of spelling and grammatical errors in your emails.

Why we love it:

Successful communication is crucial in the marketing and business worlds. Clean emails make a big difference.

What they announced:

Slices make your smartphone even smarter by showing parts of apps right when you need them most. Say for example you search for “Lyft” in Google Search on your phone—you can see an interactive Slice that gives you the price and time for a trip to work, and you can quickly order the ride.

Why we love it:

In the future, this could mean easy transactions for your eCommerce business through your brand’s app. Consumers can quickly compare prices and make decisions more simply.

What they announced:

Suggested actions, powered by machine learning, will start to show up on your photos right as you view them giving you the option to brighten, share, rotate or archive a picture. Another action on the horizon is the ability to quickly export photos of documents into PDFs.

New color pop creations leave the subject of your photo in color while setting the background to black and white. We’re also working on the ability for you to change black-and-white photos into color in just a tap.

Why we love it:

All of these are exciting because visuals are one of the most important pieces of marketing. 40% of people respond better to visuals than text information, so captivating pictures are a must, especially for your business’s social media strategy.

What they announced:

With style match, if an outfit or a home decor item catches your eye, you can open Lens and not only get info on that specific item (like reviews) but also see similar items.

Why we love it:

Any interactive way to get people to try your products is a brand win.

What they announced:

Lens now uses real-time identification so you’ll be able to browse the world around you just by pointing your camera. It’s able to give you information quickly and anchor it to the things you see.

Why we love it:

This is an eCommerce dream. Essentially, it’s influencer-marketing without all the hassle.

What they announced:

Thanks to a capability called Augmented Images, you’ll be able to bring images to life just by pointing your phone at them—this works on QR codes, AR markers and static image targets (like maps, products in a store, logos, photos or movie posters).

Why we love it:

This feature opens doors to more creative marketing strategies for your business. Interactive marketing is a huge market for most target audiences, so catch your audience’s eye with unique experiences.

What they announced:

We’ll launch a beta that allows developers to display relevant content from their apps—such as a product catalog for a shopping app—within ads, giving users more helpful information before they download an app.

Why we love it:

Better targeting with ads means more relevant ads and ads that people will actually want to look at. They will be super specified to those people.

What they announced:

Developers using ads to grow their user bases will soon have a more complete picture with view through conversion (VTC) reporting, providing more insight into ad impressions and conversions.

Why we love it:

As all advertisers know, the more insights the better.
