Bedroom Design Guidelines

A Bedroom is a room located in a residential or commercial housing unit characterized by sleeping for the inhabitants. An average western bedroom normally contains a single bed, one or at most two chairs, a cupboard, and a mirror or dressing table, which all contain cabinets. Bedroom furniture is often chosen depending on the room's features. For example, a bedroom used by a single occupant would require a very different set of furnishings than the bedroom for a couple. Bedroom furniture also differs from other rooms because it typically has a closed-off space to safeguard the occupant's belongings.

Bedroom furniture is made to fit the bedroom and may consist of cabinets, dressers, desks, chests, nightstands, wardrobes and any other accessories needed. Other features to consider when selecting bedroom furniture include the availability of storage, accessibility, color scheme, and height of ceilings. One of the main factors that affect the choice of a bedroom suite is the type of mattress selected. Some of the factors that need to be considered are:

Bedroom suite type the type of bedroom needs to be chosen depending on the bedroom needs. For example, an adult bedroom would require a mattress having more than an inch of clearance from the floor to the ceiling. This helps in making the room comfortable. The bed should be of the right density and provide firm support to the mattress. For children, bed sizes should be limited for safety reasons. If a child over four years of age sleeps in the bedroom, the bed should have a bed guard or other protection for the child.

Household Inventory each member of the household has a role to play in ensuring the efficient use of the Bedroom. Therefore, it is important to list all the household items in the bedroom so that none is forgotten about. The list can include the number of members in the family and their roles, including access to the master bedroom.

Each bedroom has a closet; therefore, it is essential to create a good closet system for each bedroom. When installing closet organizers, it is important to keep in mind the existing bedroom measurements and place the closet accordingly. It is recommended to purchase matching, or at least approximately matching closet organizers.

Dresser in most cases, the existing bedroom will have a dresser already installed. If there is no dresser in the existing bedroom, then it is recommended to purchase a dresser that is in proportion with the size of the bedroom. In most cases, the dressers in newly constructed bedrooms are smaller than the existing bedroom. To entertain friends and family, one can opt to place a small entertainment center in the newly constructed bedroom. If the entertainment center is larger than the dresser, then one can relocate it.

Bedroom storage for each bedroom will require adequate storage space. Therefore, it is important to create an adequate storage system in each bedroom. In most cases, the closet will hold the majority of the bedroom's storage requirements. The closets are available in different sizes and shapes; therefore, it is advisable to buy a closet that fits well with the size of another bedroom. If the other bedroom requires an additional storage area such as drawers and shelves, then the bedroom furniture should cater to the requirements.

Egress from one bedroom to another bedroom is another concern for homeowners. In most cases, the bedroom doors have an upper frame that allows easy egress from one bedroom to another. If the door frame is too narrow for comfortable walking, then it may be necessary to install a stairway or ladders to enable easy egress from one bedroom to another bedroom. In some cases, where the width of the hallway or staircase is greater than the width of the bedroom door, it may be necessary to install a door adjacent to the bedroom to allow easy egress. This solution is usually found at construction time and is not covered by homeowners' building insurance. It is advised to double-check with the local authorities before taking up construction work to ensure compliance with all the relevant building codes.
