Free Alternatives to Photoshop – Part 2

Another Simple Guide?

About a week ago I wrote a simple guide to free Photoshop alternatives but that was about software based Photo editors that you have to download and install on your computers.

If you want to please check out the previous guide here.

Today this simple guide will be about web-based alternatives to Photoshop. If you don’t like downloading ‘stuff ‘ to your computer this is the guide for you.

So you don’t get bored I will keep it short and simple.

We have 3 parts;

  • Part 1 covers Pixlr
  • Part 2 covers Sumopaint
  • Part 3 covers iPiccy

Hope you like it!

Part 1 – Pixlr

What is it?

Pixlr is a cloud based set of image tools and utilities pixlr

which include photo editors, a photo sharing service

and a browser extension.

It was designed with advanced users in mind but the apps

cater for both professional and novice users.

Pixlr is a mixture of both Web-based and desktop image editors.

You can download it or edit photos on PCs, Smartphones or tablets. Both iOS and Android version are available. The easiest way to use it is to just load the online version via your browser.

On their site Pixlr separates its photo Editing into Pixlr Editor which is advanced and Pixlr express which is efficient.
The Pixlr Editor is similar to Photoshop. It is a no frills photo editor which lets you size, crop and tweak your image.

Express is different because it allows you experiment by putting creative overlays on your images. You can use this to create special effects on your images. For example, you can stain the image to give the impression that you put a coke cup on it. That’s a great tool right there isn’t it?

According to Pixlr, the express editor is their most popular editing software.

Pixlr has thousands of combinations of free effects, overlays and filters. Once you’ve finished editing your photos you can share them directly to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or any other of your favorite social media network.

Pixlr has loads of tools and filters. They are too many to mention them all here so I will just go through some of them.

  • Pinch tool
  • Bloat tool
  • Red-eye tool
  • Blur tool
  • Smudge tool
  • Spot heal

  • Engrave and emboss
  • Sharpen
  • Box blur
  • Gaussian blur

  • Brightness and contrast
  • Hue and saturation

Pixlr includes other features like layers, curves, free transform, lasso and marquee selection tools and a free vector graphics feature.

pixlr interface

You can see from the screenshot above that Pixlrs interface is well laid out. You have your tools to the left-hand side and a menu across the top which you can get to easily.

You have access to over 20 different languages by clicking the language option on the menu.

There is also a free font feature that can also be accessed from the menu.

The best way you can learn to use any software is to get in there and get stuck in.

Part 2 – Sumopaint

What is it? sumopaint

Sumopaint is a browser based online painting and

image editing application. It has an active art community

consisting of over 570,000 registered members and over

2,000,000 images.

Created in 2007 by sumo ltd it is, in some ways, similar to

Pixlr although it has many of the same tools and features as Photoshop.

Its target market is Illustrators.

This editing suite has one of the most many-sided collections of image editing features straddling the line between desktop applications like Photoshop and GIMP.

You will discover that the free version of Sumopaint has many of the standard, basic image editing tools including many fun paint tool features.

Although Sumopaint sprung up in relatively recent years it stands out as being truly great at what it does.

It has a layout that will be very familiar to Adobe users with an easy to understand tool set and a sense of minimalism that focuses on getting the job done.

This web-based editor is more suited to serious photographers who don’t want to compromise on any editing options and who also do not wish to pay for their editing software.

  • Nice range of Filters for producing creative images.

OS: Windows, mac OS X or Linux

Sumo paint is easy to use, has a lot of features that can be accessed by users from beginner to expert.

In contrast to its software-based counterparts, Sumopaint is just as efficient in terms of paint functionality and image design as they are.

The one drawback with this photo editing software is that it does not have the photo sharing and social media site integration which some of its rivals have.

The best way you can learn to use any software is to get in there and get stuck in.

Part 3 – iPiccy

What is it? iPiccy

iPiccy is an online photo editing and sharing

application that gives users all over the world

the ability to easily and quickly modify, improve,

print and share.

You can edit photos with an automated process. In most cases you can apply the effects to the entire picture instead of using wands and tools to edit your photos. If you use Paint instead of Photoshop, this might be the app for you.

This might seem like a simplified app but there is complexity in its large offering of editing options. The major drawback here is that there is no undo button.

If you are new to iPiccy there is the option to go through and Intro tour to get familiar with the interface and functions.

This photo editing app has a collage maker and there are plenty of interesting layouts for you to use. iPiccy’s tools are well organized so you can navigate around easily.

iPiccy has social media sharing functionality so when you finish editing your photos you can share them on Facebook.
