Asian Games 2018: Did Bahrain’s Athlete Obstruct Hima Das Intentionally? India Protests For The 2nd Time

Did the athlete from Bahrain obstruct Hima Das in her 4×400 mixed relay event due to which the Indian team was deprived of the gold medal at Jarkata 2018 Asian Games on the 10 day 28 August? Bahrain clinched the gold in the event.

The Indian team of Hima Das, Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Arokia Rajiv and Poovamma fetched a silver medal in 4×400 mixed relay event with a timing of 3 minutes and 15.71 seconds a

The Athletics Federation of India lodged a strong protest against Bahrain for causing hindrance to Hima Das during the event. On 29 August India protested to the jury of appeals.

But they rejected the appeal. But India was not happy over the decision and once again appealed against the decision. The Jury of Appeal will be meeting in the evening today and they will take the final decision.

India’s Anas started in a spectacular way as he opened up a huge 30m lead over his rival from Bahrain and handed over the baton to Povamma. But the Karnataka athlete could not come fast and by the time she passed on to the baton to Assam’s Hima, Bahrain had made a huge lead.

When Hima got the Baton she had to change her lane and sidestep as Bahrain’s Oluwakemi Adekoya who fell before her causing obstruction to Hima’s ways after Bahrain’s athlete had already passed the baton to Salwa Naser. The act on the part of Bahrain’s athlete was intentional and accidental is yet to be proved.

Later on, Hima said that she did not know if Bahrain’s athlete actually got off balance or fell deliberately to obstruct her. It was a good experience for her and will try to improve her performance.

By the time it was too late for Hima and she could not cover the distance as Salwa pulled away quickly.

The Indian team clocked 3 minute and 15.71 seconds whereas the Bahrain team clocked 3:11.89. Final India finished second behind Bahrain. Kazakhstan team got the third position with a timing of 3:19.42.
