In the recently concluded Assembly Elections in Himachal Pradesh BJP won by a comfortable margin, defeating the Congress handsomely. But, BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Prem Kumar Dhumal lost the elections, making the case for the chief ministerial post a bit tricky indeed. Just after the poll verdict was out, central observers Nirmala Sitharaman and Narender Tomar were sent by BJP High Command who met several BJP leaders and RSS functionaries to select the next chief minister.
Be it former chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal or Seraj MLA Jai Ram Thakur – the contest for the coveted post has become an intense one. Things came ugly when the central observers were talking to various leaders and various supporters of each of the two front-runners were chanting the names.
As of now, it seems that central observers are yet to arrive at a specific conclusion with a final name and it comes down to Amit Shah to take the final decision. Certainly, if Prem Kumar Dhumal is selected, he will have to win bypoll in half a year. Age is on the side of Jai Ram Thakur. It remains to be seen whether BJP can take the right step forward and concentrate on building a strong base of the saffron outfit in Himachal Pradesh.
