Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh gave a counter to his fellow Congress leader Shashi Tharoor over his remarks on the erstwhile Kings of the country during the British rule. CM Virbhadra Singh, who belongs to the Royal family of Himachal, said that they didn’t accept defeat in front of the British. He reminded that East India Company tried twice to occupy Himachal Pradesh, but they were unsuccessful. He said that they wrote to England requesting more forces to achieve this. But, meanwhile, Queen Victoria has dissolved the company and declared herself as the Empress of India.
CM Virbhadra Singh’s statement came in reply to the comment of Shashi Tharoor who said that the so-called Maharajas have hastened to accommodate themselves when the British trampled over their honour and now are after a filmmaker claiming that their prestige was at stake. Tharoor was commenting on the people who were against the release of the film ‘Padmavati.’ The film is said to have shown distorted history related to Queen Padmavati, who is adored as a great princess and even as a Goddess by some people. Groups such as Karni Sena have threatened to resort to violence if the film hits the theatre. Some groups have demanded that the film has to be shown to them before release.
