Jio Mami Closing Day: Memories Of Lifetime!

Mumbai Film Festival, MAMI the most popular film festival in India has come to an end. We have been giving you updates directly by witnessing the event unfold itself in front of our eyes. It is immense pleasure for us that we were able to share all our experiences from the festival with you. Thank you for being a part of our journey. Let’s dive into the closing day updates then…

We wanted to catch four movies like every day but could only catch three as one movie has been cancelled by the organisers. We caught up with closing film, Omerta, Manifesto and Mother.

Omerta is a film by Hansal Mehta, about the crude, well educated and sophisticated terrorist Omer Saeed Sheikh. He is from England, moved by Bosnia massacre and enters the world of Jihad to find respect for himself and his beliefs. Filmmaker cleverly depicts his inner demon and hints at how even well educated young Muslims around the world are entering into this evil force in the name of God. It is an enjoyably invigorating journey into the psyche of a purely evil person who is protected by Pakistan even after announcing a death sentence. Rajkumar Rao once again proved that he is one of the best leading men in the country and delivered his best again. We enjoyed the Q&A with the team and the process of how the actor and director decided to bring this monster to life is intriguing. It is definitely one of the movies of the year and festival.

Next is Manifesto. It ridicules the various Manifestos of Art with each everyday persons trying to deliver it. Cate Blanchett in 13 different roles steals the show by delivering the Manifestos in monologues. This is a new, original idea that makes fun of originality, sincerity and honesty in Art.

The last film of MAMI for us, Mother. We could not catch it the first time around but luckily got a chance to watch it as the last movie. We enjoyed it a lot. It is Darren Aronofsky’s vision of Nature, Bible and God, comes out here. He tries to depict how religion and love towards it are killing our Nature step by step. How we the inhabitants become the intruders and the complete unwelcome guests for Nature and killing our Mother, step by step. One of the brilliant works of the director but due to his religious tendencies, this might not be liked by everyone.

At the closing ceremony, several films have been awarded and we are glad that we caught up with them. On Body and Soul got the audience choice award, The Wound, The Square got critics awards. On the whole, it is one of the best possible experiences except for few films that don’t hold up for the popularity of the festival. Memories from this festival will be with us for a lifetime and we are happy that you have also joined us in this journey. See you next year, MAMI …
