The outcome of the Vergara Assembly polls in Kerala has embarrassed BJP to some extent. A state where BJP has certainly stepped up with Janaraksha Yatra, such results were certainly not expected. Party candidate K Jayachandran Master was expected to make a good fight, if not, to make an upset.
Ultimately, he managed to get only 5,728 of the 122,623 Votes polled. As far as poll statistics is concerned, BJP couldn’t eclipse 7,015 votes which they got in 2016. Interestingly, Social Democratic Party (SDPI) got 8,648 votes, significantly more than what BJP got there. It remains to be seen how does the BJP top brass reflect upon the defeat.
During the election campaign, the saffron outfit stressed on Hindutva & development – but the results didn’t reflect public support or sympathy. There has been criticism from certain quarters that BJP could have campaigned, promoting their active work for abolishing triple talaq or social schemes for women empowerment.
In other words, the Hindutva line ultimately paid dividends to the IUML. Anyhow it remains to be seen whether BJP thinktank modifies its policy or carries on with the same strategy in the upcoming days.
