HBO edits together Godfather and Godfather Part II in to one large epic

The time has come again for me to try to catch The Godfather and The Godfather Part II in chronological order.

Every so often someone gets the idea to edit the first two Godfather films into chronological order, this is known as The Godfather Epic cut. This means the Robert De Niro “young Vito” scenes from Part II kick off the film as opposed to Connie’s wedding. There have been previous releases like this, but they are very hard to find. The last time it was released on home media, so far as I can find, was a 1981 VHS release, so it’s been a while since this has happened.

Well, HBO of all places has now done this and you have until the end of January to catch it on HBO Now and HBO Go. In addition to the chronological shuffle, the cable channel has also cut in some scenes missing from the theatrical cut, jacking the running time of this up to 424 minutes (just over 7 hours). With this cut now digitally restored, I’m thinking there is a new release of the films on the horizon, and I certainly hope so as I’ve wanted this in my collection for ages.

Now I just need to find the time to watch this, but it must be consumed by as many people as possible. And lets just hope for a Blu-ray or digital release of it.
