Doug Liman departs directing duties on Gambit

Fox is once again on the hunt for a new director for the long-gestating Gambit film.

At some point Fox is going to need to give up the ghost on Gambit I think. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Doug Liman has departed directing duties on the troubled X-Men spinoff.

Linman joined the project in Oct. 2015 after Rupert Wyatt left the project. Originally the film was scheduled to shoot in the fall of 2015, and then it slipped to the early part of 2016. Now the start of production is set for Jan. 2017 but it is currently undergoing script rewrites and a hunt for a new director.

Somehow, through all of this, Channing Tatum has remained attached to play the title role.

Fox has been trying to spin up this Cajun mutant into his own movie for what seems like ages now, and with the success of Deadpool I think the studio is hot to get every solo film they can in the pipeline. You do have to wonder why this particular project has been so troubled, but hopefully we’ll end up with a good film out of it… someday.
