13 Reasons Why is the best show you aren’t watching. Let me be clear from the jump, it is is not an easy watch. It is not a comfortable watch. But it is something you should watch.
Season 1 came out some time ago on Netflix, and I have to admit I avoided it until recently from hearing it dealt with suicide. It didn’t sound like a fun time, but I wasn’t completely shut off from it. Recently looking for something new to watch I finally decided to give it a go… and I devoured it as fast as humanly possible.
From the opening moments of episode 1 of 13 Reasons Why you are just hooked. The whole concept revolved around the suicide of 17-year-old Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) that recorded 13 cassette tapes before her death spelling out why she did it. Each tape focuses on one person who she feels someohow contributed to her taking her own life. The tapes are sent to the person on tape 1 with the idea once they finished listening they will pass them on the person on tape 2.
Without revealing which tape he is on, we catch up with the tapes when they have made their way to Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette). Te then follow his journey of listening to the tapes and the impact they have on him and those around him. He questions his inclusion in the story, where he falls into the narrative, and what he should do about all of the dark secrets he is learning.
I don’t want to give away anything else that happens in the series as it is gripping and plays out as a mystery. So much happens in this series that I have already made my way through the first season a second time to catch things I might have missed. (I had)
Let me be crystal clear here: 13 Reasons Why is not for everyone. It deals with some extremely difficult topics, and it did not sugar coat Hannah’s suicide scene in any way. It is possibly some of the most unsettling footage I have ever watched in a TV show. But this show is so well structured, acted, and so on that it is worthy of your attention.
13 Reasons Why season 2 is almost here
As season 1 finished for me, I knew season 2 was coming, but had no clue how the story could continue. Once I saw the release date trailer, it all made perfect sense.
There were revelations in the original 13 tapes that could lead to repercussions for some characters. and it looks as though that is what we will be following. And I’m here for it. All I can do is hope it lives up to the first season.
Should you choose to watch the series, and you find any of the issues in it too much – something it acknowledges – please check out 13reasonswhy.info.
13 Reasons Why season 2 hits Netflix on May 18.
