Disney developing “a few” Star Wars TV series

You know that saying about how you should learn to walk before you run? Apparently, no one at Disney is familiar with this.

Following up on its latest earnings announcement, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that the company is working on “a few” television series based on Star Wars. All of them are destined for the company’s upcoming subscription streaming service that is due to launch in 2019. While nothing is known about any of the potential shows as of yet, Iger did speak to the creative teams by saying, “Because the deal isn’t completely closed, we can’t be specific about that.” He went on to add, “I think you’ll find the level of talent … on the television front will be rather significant as well.”

While fans have dreamed of a live-action Star Wars TV series for years, it seems as though we may get more than we hoped for in the near future.

Now, to be clear, he did not say they were all live action, and there are already some rumors that another animated series is in development with Star Wars Rebels ending next month.

If Iger was looking for a way for the Disney service to be a hit out of the gate, he may have found it, but one has to wonder when the world will say “enough.” While die-hard fans have had decades of comics and novels, your casual fans have only really had movies to keep up with until this point. Yes, Rebels and Clone Wars added to the mythos, but they weren’t essentially viewing. For this to work Disney will need to keep that concept going with whatever these upcoming projects are, especially with even more films announced this week.

While it’s great to have so much new Star Wars content, part of the beauty was the long gaps we had before. A film every year plus TV shows could see the sheen wear off this property pretty quickly.
