Ben Affleck said to be stepping away from Batman role

The DC Extended Universe may be about to lose one of its most prominent members if the rumors are to be believed.

According to an unnamed source speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Brothers and Ben Affleck are looking for a way the two can part company when it comes to Batman. While changes in actors are not unheard of at all in this type of role, what is a bit shocking is that the change may be addressed in the films.

But a source with knowledge of the situation says that the studio is working on plans to usher out Affleck’s Batman — gracefully, addressing the change in some shape or form in one of the upcoming DC films.

It is not unheard of in the comics for others to don the cowl for short periods. In 1993 Batman had his back broken by Bane in the Knightfall storyline and Azrael took over the job of Batman to protect the city. After Azrael, Dick Grayson – the original Robin – took over while Batman continued to heal.

In the comics this isn’t that huge of a deal, but how filmgoers would react to anyone other than ‘Bruce Wayne’ being Batman is the question. If you think Batman you immediately know that is Bruce Wayne. You don’t think, ‘oh, it might be Dick Grayson wearing the cowl.” If they see a need to change actors, just change actors. It’s not that big of a deal.

As to why this change may happen, there are multiple reason. First, Affleck is a very busy actor and director and he has already stepped away from directing The Batman. Now that Matt Reeves has stepped in, he wants to do a trilogy, and that would mean Affleck’s duties would end in his early 50s. Add in that Affleck’s script has now been tossed, and his reasons for sticking around are dwindling.

At this point, I’m just throwing in the towel on the DC Extended Universe. Yes, I will still watch the movies, but as for this ever being a cohesive project that rivals the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s just not going to happen. The DCEU is being managed by businessmen that have no clue as to what made the MCU successful and simply think so long as the movies are aware of each other that’s enough.

It’s as if someone truly did give a thousand monkeys typewriters and said “get to work!”

Someone wake me when this nightmare ends.
