Freeform adds New Warriors with Squirrel Girl to its lineup

Freeform is going full speed into the Marvel game announcing its second Series, The New Warriors.

Cloak & Dagger was already announced for Freeform, and with the pilot already filmed it has been confirmed it is moving on to series. If that wasn’t enough, however, the cable network has now announced it is also moving forward with a New Warriors series that will feature the wildly popular Squirrel Girl.

This will be a first for a Marvel property as New Warriors is being tooled as a half-hour comedy. Cloak & Dagger will follow the usual one-hour drama mold Marvel is known for, but there is certainly no harm in trying out a comedy series as well.

The inclusion of Squirrel Girl is an interesting one, and the internet loves her, along with some notable celebrities such as Anna Kendrick. Somehow I doubt she’ll commit to a 10-episode series, but one never knows.

For those who forget Squirrel Girl’s origin, I’ve written it up before:

Well, here you go. Squirrel Girl is actually Doreen Green, a nature lover from Los Angeles that idolizes Iron Man. After she develops powers she makes a plan to meet her hero who is engaged in a fight with Doctor Doom and she uses her ability to talk to squirrels to defeat the super villain. Iron Man says she is too young to be a hero being only 14 at the time, but he would put in a good word with the Avengers when she’s older. She eventually moves to New York City and becomes the defender of Central Park.

Marvel is hitting TV hard right now, and it doesn’t look like it plans to slow down any time soon.
