Deadpool receives WGA award nomination

The Writer’s Guild of America has recognized Deadpool in the Adapted Screenplay Category.

Has the world turned upside down?

Comic book adaptations have gotten a reputation for never being acknowledged by awards. There are occasional exceptions such as Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, but, in general, they are just considered popcorn fare and unworthy of praise.

Something has happened this awards season, however, and Deadpool is looking like an actual contender. The WGA has nominated the upstart comedy in the adapted screenplay category against the likes of Arrival, Fences, Hidden Figures and Nocturnal Animals. And there is some actual chatter that it may be looking at a nod from the Oscars as well.

Has the world gone upside down? Could the comic book movie to finally go big be the highest grossing R-rated movie in history? Based on a character that breaks the fourth wall?

My head is spinning at this idea.
