NOW, PLAY IT PROPERLY
Diana Russell Write in Pathways to God, a journey of 31 days with St Ignatius:
“I have been privileged to be able to take part in a week of guided prayer almost every year over the last nine years. I would just like to re-visit my first week, when I confessed doubts about my ability to pray and was advised to sit down and play the piano - an activity I enjoy. If possible, I could assume Jesus’ presence and share my playing with Him. After I had finished playing him my latest piece, I turned to Him and asked what he thought about it. He merely said, ‘Now, play it properly.’
I felt slightly ruffled, but knew exactly what He meant. I had been trying not to make mistakes, to give a ‘correct’ performance, to follow the rules. Jesus was asking me to forget about all that and to play for enjoyment, allowing myself to let go and express all that I wanted to express through the medium of this piece of music. I played as I was asked, with abandonment, with freedom, not minding about the mistakes but just ‘going for it’. At the end, Jesus simply said to me, ‘That’s how I want you to live’.”
HOW ARE YOU LIVING YOUR LIFE?
Diana goes on to say, “Have I lived like this? On the whole, I would say that I haven’t. I have continued to try to tick the boxes, to follow the rules, not to stick my neck out. But I do know that Jesus continues to have that expectation of me and, occasionally, I do try to move out of my comfort zone and have a go at something that, frankly, terrifies me!”
