CELEBRATING LEONARDO

Leonardo da Vinci died on May 2, 1519. That’s yesterday! I almost missed it. To celebrate his life here are some snippets from his notebooks:

  • The fallacy of opinion: “The greatest deception men suffer is from their own opinions.” – Notebook XIX
  • Progress: “Poor is the pupil that does not surpass his master.” – Notebook I
  • Mental waste: “Iron rusts from disuse; stagnant water loses its purity and in cold weather becomes frozen; even so does inaction sap the vigor of the mind.” – Notebook I
  • Hierarchy of sensation: “The eye, which is called the window of the soul, is the principal means by which the central sense can most completely and abundantly appreciate the infinite works of nature; and the ear is the second, which acquires dignity by hearing of the things the eye has seen.” – Notebook IX
  • Keep your eyes on the road: “He who walks straight rarely falls.” – Notebook XIX
  • The artist’s dilemma: “It vexes me greatly that having to earn my living has forced me to interrupt the work and to attend to small matters.” – Notebook XXI

Quotes: The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci (Richter, 1888)
Art: Leonardo da Vinci self portrait
