A Holistic Approach for Treating Mental Illness

“Behind everyone’s mask is pain, anger, fear, guilt, shame, grief, envy, you name it. Behind the mask is a wounded human being. That is true not just for some of us. It is true for ALL of US….The shame based search for love and approval must be abandoned…. We must throw away our mask and with it the need to disguise, or deny our pain.” Paul Ferrini

People can and people do heal from all types of illnesses…mental, physical and spiritual. There are certain categories of illness that complete healing is often rare for many individuals. However, there are powerful therapies and holistic approaches that can increase ones ability to heal that many people are not aware of.

The following article is written with the intent of supplying health care practitioners, patients and the general public with information regarding a variety of approaches that are available for assisting individuals on their journey to living a healthy and fulfilled life. The modalities referred to in this article can be used in conjunction with any traditional practices, and when used in a holistic fashion the outcomes can be astounding.

Please note: always consult with your doctor or health care provider prior to starting any of the suggested approaches. They can easily be integrated in the care that you might already be receiving.

The information presented is well worth the discussion…a discussion to be had with any health care provider.

It is often very frustrating and discouraging for individuals who are suffering, as well as for people who work in healing professions, to remain positive. There are illnesses where far too often outcomes prove to be very disappointing and quite discouraging for clients, their family members and practitioners. Often their disappointment is enhanced by literature that claims that people cannot heal from certain types of illnesses. This article will deal mainly with mental illness, however the below mentioned approaches can also enhance recovery from physical illnesses.

There is evidence, both scientific and personal evidence that prove that many mental illnesses are curable. Some patients not only learn coping skills… they are often cured.
As Dr. Abram Hoffer has stated, “The term ‘cure’ does not exist in psychiatry…You cannot cure them, you can help them…We don’t have that view. My friends and I, in the field of orthomolecular psychiatry, we are aiming at recovery.”

Dr. Abram Hoffer, MD, PhD, RNCP, was the founder of The Orthomolecular Vitamin Information Centre, a Fellow Neuropharmacology Physician in Canada, former Director of Psychiatric Research in the Province of Saskatchewan of the Department of Public Health, and former Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Saskatchewan.

“…with orthomolecular treatment the majority of schizophrenic patients can hope to become well and normally independent."
The following is a link to a brief interview with Dr. Hoffer explaining the facts related to orthomolecular medicine, and how some of his patients who recovered from mental illnesses are now living successful, productive, and fulfilled lives.

Dr. Alice Lee-Bloem, a practicing psychiatrist, utilizes orthomolecular therapy and energy healing to assist her clients.

“As a holistic psychiatrist, integrating orthomolecular and energy medicine into my practice, I have successfully treated patients with depression, postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder without the need for medications.” Dr. Lee-Bloem

“I have been off all antipsychotic medications since August 18, 2010, and I feel so exhilarated…for the first time since my illness, my auditory hallucinations gradually decreased in severity and eventually stopped altogether.”  R.E. (Dr. Lee-Bloem’s patient)

There are a number of amazing articles and interviews on Dr. Lee-Bloems website:  http://holisticpsychiatrist.com/

Another powerful modality for assisting people on their healing journey is Neurolinguistic Programming. (NLP)

“NLP may be the most powerful vehicle for change in existence...” Modern Psychology

The following link contains a very encouraging article written by Dr. Richard Bolstad and Margot Hamblett related to the treatment of schizophrenia using NLP techniques.

It is also very important to remember the healing power of belief. There is evidence presented in scientific research by such researchers as Dr. Herbert Benson of Harvard Medical School and founder of the Henry-Benson Mind/Body Institute that merits the cautionary use of negative comments and beliefs…statements such as “there is no cure”.

"Your thoughts can have enormous power…take advantage of that, and by appropriately believing in what can heal, we can remember those patterns in our brain and turn on remembered wellness.”

Please watch the following two interviews with Dr. Benson discussing the concept of the relaxation response:

The following two sites present information related to ground breaking research by renowned doctor and university professor, Dr. Bruce Lipton.

Dr. Lipton’s research is further scientific evidence that we all have the power to “heal” and how our healing is related to our environment. It also shows why we must be very careful when we hold the belief that “we cannot heal”.

“The function of the mind is to create coherence between our beliefs and the reality we experience,” Dr. Lipton said. “What that means is that your mind will adjust the body’s biology and behavior to fit with your beliefs.” “The moment you change your perception is the moment you rewrite the chemistry of your body."

The new science of epigenetics promises that every person on the planet has the opportunity to become who they really are… including healing our bodies, mind and spirit…and living in peace.

I could continue with pages of references and evidence that refer to the many healthy and powerful healing modalities available to those who want to heal from many types of illnesses. They would include such practices as engaging the Relaxation Response through various types of meditations , cognitive restructuring, Quantum TLC, yoga, a healthy nutrition and exercise plan, mindfulness practices, and ecopsychology activities, to name a few.

We have been taught many lies about our ability to heal, and unfortunately we believe these lies to be true. It is now time to move forward and learn the truth about our ability to heal. By changing our beliefs…our perceptions…we can create an inner environment that will begin to engage our innate ability to make positive emotional and physical changes.

For those who require more scientific evidence to back up the claims made above, I challenge them to provide scientific studies to disprove these claims. Even better…I challenge them to conduct their own control scientific studies using the above mentioned therapies in order to discover their healing powers.

We can continue to argue and debate among ourselves as to what is or what is not scientific evidence. We can debate forever about the problems associated with the world of pharmaceutical medications, or alternative therapies and medicine. Or we can begin to work together to discover and utilize all available modalities in harmony with each other. It is our ethical and moral duty to learn how to use every modality in a holistic integrated fashion, giving patients, as well as the public in general, valuable information that can actually result in a healthy healing lifestyle.

Please become aware of healthy methods to wellness...just as I did. They, along with the advice given by my family doctor, have helped me heal from both physical and mental illnesses.

* Note: It is always of value to have a medical doctor be part of the team you choose for your holistic approach to dealing with any type of illness.
