If Pakatan has governed well, Cameron Highland by-election would have been an easy walkover. But due to their lacklustre performance, they are not too sure of victory and are sending many of their big guns to campaign.
This old wine in new bottle Pakatan government used the tried and tested mantra of "vote for us if you want development". Some were threatened that their wages would not be paid if they do not vote Pakatan.
On the other hand, we have BN who field an Orang Asli candidate hoping to capitalize on "only Orang Asli can help Orang Asli" argument.
It's actually the independent candidate Wong Seng Yee who caught my attention. He seems well versed in local issues yet aware of the bigger picture. He vows to sort out leasehold and licence for local farms, be a bridge between state and federal government to modernize farming methods. This is an important point, the farming methods in Malaysia are very much outdated and labour intensive. Productivity can be improved with technology.
Unfortunately, Malaysians still pretty much vote according to party or racial/religious line. Ideas and capabilities of candidate are the last of their concern. So I think the independent candidate will almost certainly lose, perhaps even his deposit.
