Good Weather For Chickens

Not a cloud in the sky!

What a joy it has been today to have sunshine and temperatures warm enough for me to be outside and comfortable in a t-shirt and sandals! We had a high of +7C (44F) this afternoon. We let the chickens out, with no sign of the ermine, and they had a great time sunning themselves on the back steps and in the driveway--the snow-free areas. I cooked their warm meal and divided it into two aluminum pie pans, which I placed on the driveway, and they went at it voraciously. They certainly made short work of those two dishes of food! Within six minutes there was not a scrap of it to be found.

What I saw when I returned with my camera a minute after setting out two full plates of food.

Voracious Eaters

J'ai des livres !

As expected, I received ten items from the library books-by-mail program, divided into two pouches, when I drove Toad to our community mailbox this afternoon. I had considered walking the one-mile round trip until I walked around in the driveway and realized that I am not in good enough shape for that yet. I'll have to build up to it again.

My grandson GC called my home phone early this evening and spoke a few words of greeting before handing the phone to his mama. He's not feeling well, stopped up and no appetite, poor little guy, but D says he is still playing. He goes to her often to be cuddled. GT began fake coughing after D told him that he should let GC sit on her lap because he is sick. We laughed but she had GT sit close to her.

I still have this headache, although it isn't as bad today. What has been bad is my IBS or whatever I have that causes me such discomfort and trouble. That was another reason why I couldn't walk much today. In fact, I had to hurry back from the mailbox run due to the cramping. So when I practiced French via Duolingo I just did one exercise to strengthen Verbs: Être / Avoir and return it to gold. My French tree is totally gold once again and I have continued my streak.

Not a good day for me to cook for us, as I'm in a lot of discomfort and have little appetite; I ate a bit of potato salad in order to be able to tolerate my medicines, and a few saltines later one. Toad scrounged up his meals (egg rolls with plum sauce, hummus on a one bun, potato salad) today and let me rest. Last night I watched four episodes of Justified season two and believe that I have only four episodes to go in this season. I plan to watch at least one of them tonight after I read some of the Maud Lewis book aloud to Toad. He says he feels awful, which he always says. He's complaining now because he has had to fetch in some wood for tonight and tomorrow. It's supposed to rain all day tomorrow and again on Sunday, and we'll need to have the woodstove going because we'll have a damp cold otherwise.

I read three more chapters of the Maud Lewis book (below) aloud to Toad and we talked about how terrible it was even as recently as the 1960's when unwed mothers were incarcerated in Poor Farms in Nova Scotia. Afterwards I leafed through the newly arrived The Illuminated Life of Maud Lewis, by Lance Woolaver and Bob Brooks, showing Toad the folk art and photographs of Maud Lewis. I'll read the text later.

Too tired now (10:50pm) to watch Justified, so I'm off to bed to read the Elly Griffiths library book received today.

Bonne nuit !
