Dogs and Post-Surgery Stress

One of our Scotties had surgery yesterday. Grisha came home and has been crying ever since.

On the way home, my son held him without a whimper in the car. By the time we sat down with Mr. Cone-head, because he was wearing the plastic post-surgical collar, he started his high-pitched whining which has not subsided since.

And it’s been over 12 hours.

We’re thinking of taking him back to the vet today.

We removed the collar and gave him this pill and that pill, but googling them, it appears that they are more for infection reduction and anti-inflammation, rather than anything specific for Pain. I need to check into that today.

All that I’ve read in the past hour makes me believe that the crying is not from pain. Could be that perhaps that’s what humans want to believe about their pet’s pain. Or, the whimpering could be from the teeth-cleaning, I’ve read in a few instances. So maybe that.

But he had four different procedures, ranging from a mass removal to nail clipping. Grisha, age 11-1/2, had angled for a full facelift, but I told him not before me….

Everyone in the family took turns holding him during his time of need as the howls and high-pitched whimpers resounded. Thankfully, our other Scottie, Misha, seems to be going hard-of-hearing and therefore, it didn’t bother him tremendously.

Finally, early this morning the anesthesia seems to be wearing off. He is finally closing his eyes for five minutes at a time. It could be sheer exhaustion.

For now, Grisha appears more comfortable without the cone. If we watch him non-stop, that’s okay, just so he can’t bite at his stitches. But it’s going to be a long 10-14 days of recovery.

Hopefully, he and/or we will get some sleep. Sometime. Soon.
