Monday Mottoes – #233

Nobody believes that guns being fired here, there and everywhere, hurting innocent children and adults, is ever a good thing. How to bring a bad situation under control is more debatable. This past weekend’s “March for Our Lives” highlighted the issue of gun control and you can definitely find statistics to back up almost any stance.

What it boils down to is this: Criminals don’t follow gun control laws. They often obtain their firearms illegally.

I came across a very well-researched piece by Lori Robertson of factcheck.org who truly studied the issue from a multiplicity of angles which may skew facts one way or the other. You can read her piece here: https://www.factcheck.org/2015/10/gun-laws-deaths-and-crimes/. She concludes, “There’s no discernible pattern among those cities, nor clear or convincing evidence in these statistics that shows more gun laws lead to more or less gun crime.”

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum made a quote on CNN on Sunday which apparently enraged social media. It was a thoughtful response, trying to get students’ attention focused on preventing a School shooting by working to stop bullying, or finding another way to help the situation, rather than demanding that somebody else, namely lawmakers “do something”. Which brings us to today’s motto:

“How about kids instead of looking to someone else to solve their problem, do something about maybe taking CPR classes or trying to deal with situations that when there is a violent shooter that you can actually respond to that.” ~Former Sen. Rick Santorum

That’s a short sound bite which may be dismissed, but there’s really a lot of truth behind it. What about the many people who tried to sound the alarm about Parkland, Florida school shooter Nicolas Cruz’s anti-social and violent tendencies? What if students spent their time devising a system of checks and balances which could alert other schools? What if we pushed for legislation that after so many calls to the police or the FBI that some type of incarceration or holding for therapy be automatically instituted? What about mandatory metal detectors or pat-downs for schools?

Let’s face it, I believe the reasoning behind what we’re all talking about is jumping through hoops: the more hoops, the less stamina disturbed individuals have to carry-through on their plans. Or so we would hope.

If you’ve ever dealt with a deranged stalker intent on pursuing you (as I have), you might learn that is not necessarily true. Mentally-ill people do not just give up on obsessive, compulsive thoughts, no matter how difficult you make it for them.

Guns are dangerous. But so are cars, planes and trains. And no one is calling for them to be taken away.

Make it a good, safe Monday, everyone. Do something positive today. Light a candle in the darkness.
