Designing a Life with Focus

transitionTransitions, we all need to make them at one time or another, but how to accomplish this is a different matter. I recently met with a friend nearing retirement who was ready for more. She wanted some honest life coaching to move from where she had been to where she wanted to go. Here’s how it went down.

She tried to talk about everything except herself. I kept guiding her back. A number of us are so concerned with saving the rest of the world… that we never take time for ourselves.
Wanting to move from teaching, her focus suddenly swerved from academia… to minimum-wage jobs at resorts, positions more suited to college students than to college grads with decades of experience.

I urged her to consider higher-paying industries where she did not have to stand on her feet for eight hours per day. This was a bright lady, who transition2did not entirely need a full income, and yet hoped for extra take-home pay to do some home repairs, travel, and to have a few niceties. Transitioning meant floundering and we had to turn that around.

With her outgoing personality, she had to stay away from filling out online, big-box store or corporate applications. Any time she could swing an in-person interview, she nailed it. Cold-calling and networking would be key for her.

An updated resume had the Ability to speak volumes on her behalf. She needed to paper the world with her persona, even after she left a potential employer. I led her to resume-tweakers who could show her small tips to putting together a polished, written representation of herself.

And on and on it went. I could see her self-confidence rising and her ability to take charge of her own destiny increasing. Priceless.
