The world’s 10 worst serial killers by number of victims

A serial killer is anyone who has murdered three or more Victims. The most infamous serial killers like Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacey had 35 and 33 victims respectively, a huge and horrifying Number, however the world’s worst serial killer had 138 proven victims. So who are these serial killers?

Number 10

Name: Alexander Pichushkin
Country: Russia
Number of proven victims: 48
Number of suspected victims: 60
Known as The Chessboard Killer due to his exceptional talent for chess, he targeted mainly homeless men. He seemed to be in a bizarre competition with another serial killer, Andrei Chikatilo for the number of murders he could carry out. He was finally arrested in 2005 where it took the judge one hour to read the verdict, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment with the first 15 years to be spent in solitary confinement.

Name: Gary Ridgway
Country: USA
Number of proven victims: 49
Number of suspected victims: 71 – 90+
Known as The Green River Killer after his first five victims were found in the Green River. He was a truck painter who exclusively targeted female sex workers and other vulnerable women in the Seattle area where he strangled them. He confessed to murdering 71 women but was convicted of killing 49. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2001. He is still America’s most prolific serial killer.

Name: Anatoly Onoprienko
Country: Soviet Union
Number of proven victims: 52
Number of suspected victims: 52+
Known as The Beast of Ukraine he confessed to killing 52 people, mainly families where he would kill the adult male first, then the adult female, followed by the children then burn the house down to cover his tracks. He was convicted in 1995 and sentenced to life in prison where he died of a heart attack in 2013.

Number 7

Name: Andrei Chikatilo
Country: Soviet Union
Number of proven victims: 53
Number of suspected victims: 56
Known as The Butcher of Rostov he killed young women and children. He evaded capture for many years due to the fact he traveled widely and many of his  murders took place while on these trips, and it took time to link up the murders by their modus operandi.
He was eventually convicted and jailed in 1992 and subsequently executed by shooting in 1994.

Number 6

Name: Yang Xinhai
Country: China
Number of proven victims: 67
Number of suspected victims: 130+
Known as The Monster Killer he confessed to 67 murders and 23 rapes and is China’s most prolific serial killer. At night, he would enter his victims’ homes, and kill all of the occupants—mainly farmers—with axes, hammers, and shovels, sometimes killing entire families. Each time he wore new clothes and large shoes. He was sentenced to death and the sentence was carried out in 2004 by shooting.

Name: Pedro Rodrigues Filho
Country: Brazil
Number of proven victims: 71
Number of suspected victims: 100+
Known as Pedrinho Matador (Killer Petey) he killed his first two victims at the age of 14 and by the time he was 18 he had killed 10 people including his father as revenge for his killing his mother with a machete, he then ate a piece of his heart.
He claimed to have killed 100 people but only 71 have been confirmed. He was sentenced to 128 years in prison but due to killing at least 4 inmates while incarcerated his sentence was increased to 400 years. However no one can serve over 30 years in a Brazilian jail, so despite his massive sentence he was released after 34 years in 2007, only to be rearrested and jailed in 2011 for unrelated offences.

Name: Daniel Camargo
Country: Columbia
Number of proven victims: 72
Number of suspected victims: 180
His preferred victims were young girls as he hoped they were virgins, however women were counted in his targets too. He confessed to killing 72 and was imprisoned in Columbia where the murders took place but later escaped and fled to Ecuador where he he was recaptured and thrown in prison – the same one that Pedro Alvez was also serving his sentence in.
He was murdered in prison by the nephew of one of his victims.

Name: Giovanni Brusca
Country: Italy
Number of proven victims: 100
Number of suspected victims: 100 – 200
A member of the Sicilian Mafia he carried out all of his murders on their behalf, including the anti mafia prosecutor Giovanni Falcone in 1992

Number 2

Name: Pedro Lopez
Country: Columbia
Number of proven victims: 110
Number of suspected victims: 300+
Known as The Monster of the Andes, he targeted young girls between the ages of 8 and 12. He was convicted in 1980 of killing 3 girls but claimed to have killed hundreds. Despite his confession and conviction and the general suspicion that he was the worst serial killer of the 20th century he was released in 1998 and his current whereabouts are unknown.

Luis Garavito – the world’s most prolific serial killer

Name: Luis Garavito
Country: Columbia
Number of proven victims: 138
Number of suspected victims: 172 – 300
Known as La Bestia (The Beast), he confessed to killing 140 young boys between the ages of 6 and 16, mainly street children. He is suspected of killing over 300 as he continues to confess to more murders while in jail. He was sentenced to 1,853 years and nine days in jail, however, Colombian law limits imprisonment to 40 years—and because Garavito helped police find the victims’ bodies, his sentence was further reduced to 22 years – unbelievable!
