Detroit is broke and yet the city council just approved borrowing $255 million. What is the crisis? The money will be spent on parks, museum, and public safety. The details of the “wish list” of pet projects are all items that should be funded by normal budgeting – not extra-ordinary capital budgeting that the taxpayers will be funding with an additional 6% interest rate on the bond. Plus, this is government spending – in Detroit – the cash will somehow ricochet around and suspiciously find its way into the politicians’ pockets…
A 51-year-old Detroit Police Officer, Christopher Stanton, and been indicted for criminal conspiracy, illegal drug dealing (of heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl), and providing sensitive law enforcement information to a drug gang.
Speaking of injustice, Detroiter Mubarez Ahmed was just exonerated after spending 17 years in prison for a double murder that he did not commit. The UM Law School’s Innocence Project took up his case. The eye witness who identified Mubarez in a lineup was told who to select by Detroit Police, even though other witnesses told police the nickname of the shooter they saw murder the couple in their car. The is the UM Innocence Project’s 18th exoneration since it was founded in 2009.
U.S. Marshall’s are searching for Detroiter Kevin Wilson. The 57-year old has a long criminal history, including robbing and raping 3 girls at gunpoint. In prison, he spent an additional 17 years for violent assaults in the cellblock. After being released, he was convicted of another breaking and entering and failed to register as a sex offender.
State authorities are contacting the 269 families of the people whose cremation remains were discovered abandoned at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Detroit. Many of the families were devastated to learn that they paid a lot of money for burials that never happened – and now they have to pay again. Many are also upset that it took the State of Michigan 6 months to get around to contacting them.

- Detroit Police are investigating human remains found in a sewer near Steopel Park. The remains were buried 4 feet and found by a construction crew.
- A 15-year old boy was injured multiple times in a drive-by shooting at 7:45 AM, near Chalmers and Promenade. He is currently listed in temporary serious condition but is expected to survive. Police released video hoping someone will identify the shooter.
- A 45-year old Detroiter was fatally shot in an argument, at Wyoming south of The Lodge Freeway. Detroit Police have no description of the suspect.
- Detroit Police responded to a 911 call about a man with a weapon assaulting 2 people. Police shot the assailant, who later passed away at the hospital; one victim is in critical condition at the hospital.
