Detroit Realities #678

Here we go again: sleazy transit officials are trying to sneak in a tax millage increase on the August ballot – one that has the lowest attendance – to hit up taxpayers in Wayne, Macomb, and Oakland County.

Victims across Wayne County are upset that Detroit’s legal system allowed Allen Farris on a 2-day crime spree of shootings, carjackings, kidnapping, and robbery – after putting up just $2,500 in bail for yet another felonious assault. One of Farris’ victims said, “He was totally calm and deliberate, this wasn’t his first rodeo.” 56-year-old Farris is a lifelong criminal with 3 decades of convictions include: rape, armed robbery, kidnapping, destruction of property, and assault. The judge granting the tiny bail, Nancy Blount, says she did nothing wrong because he hasn’t been on parole in 10 years. Good grief Blount, do the Detroit area a favor and resign

Sunday’s storm resulted in 300,000 homes losing power around SE Michigan. A Detroit woman, Tracey Underwood, returned home when she heard the neighborhood’s power was restored, only to find her home’s interior totally charred; nothing is salvageable. When the power was restored, the transformer next to her house burst into flames, setting off sparks and electric arcs to the back of her home and catching it on fire. Ms. Underwood says, “I’m in shock, it is upsetting to lose absolutely everything.”

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • A 27-year old Detroit car wash worker, and father of 4 (and who cares for an additional 3 other kids), was shot multiple times last night. Masked home invaders kicked in the front door, shot up DeNate Lee, and stole many items from the home.
  • A 13-year-old boy was shot in the foot by a stray bullet while inside a friend’s Detroit home. At 1am, an old Taurus drove by the home and fired shots into the home, there were adults and 4 children in the home at the time. The boy’s mother and family friends believe the 13-year-old was the target of the shooting since he has starting to hang out with gang members. This is the 4th kid shot in Detroit – so far, this month.
  • A 22-year-old Detroiter was just arrested for the hit & run death of Maurice Mims, a former marine that was hit in a crosswalk by the Renaissance Center. Law enforcement worked for nearly 2 years to find the suspect and built a case against him, including DNA evidence.
  • Two Detroiters were arrested in Ohio with 142 grams of heroin worth $25,000. Demarco Johnson and Demetrius Cassity are in their 20s and charged with drug trafficking.
