Just like last year, Detroit ranked WORST in the nation for math and reading; and not much better in science. How did the local press phrase it? “School Test Scores Lagging.” Um, if you don’t acknowledge reality and highlight the problem, then there is no pressure to fix it.
The shifting crime of Detroit… I spoke with someone who lives near Detroit and he told me, “It used to be that the East Side of Detroit was the most dangerous. But with so many vacant homes and demolished homes, there aren’t nearly as many people around there anymore. So the danger has shifted to the West Side of Detroit – there are more potential crime victims around.”
In the last 30 days, 6 children have been Shot in Detroit, most of them by stray bullets. Reporters questioning people on the sidewalk outside of a court hearing for one of the child shooters includes Cornelius Grubb. Grubb says, “I love my city. I was born and raised here but I am preparing to move my family because it is too dangerous. I refuse to put my 2-year-old son at risk – I’ve been shot 11 times in Detroit. The problem is children are having children. There’s no discipline so they grow up like Pit Bulls without a leash.”
Chuck Rizzo will spend 6 years in prison for corruption in paying politicians in Macomb & Wayne County for trash collection. Rizzo cooperated with the FBI, wearing wires for the reduced sentence. Rizzo says he didn’t offer money – the politicians constantly threaten him and his business if he won’t pay them cash. Once he does pay them, their demands become more brazen – and it was all on tape. So far, Rizzo’s assistance has secured 15 convicted politicians.
One of Detroit’s most talented photographers is Joe Gall (who goes by the nickname Camera Jesus). While in Detroit planning a project, someone stole his camera bag with all of his equipment. Mark that down as WIN Joe – that you made it out of Detroit alive. A young French graffiti artist was executed in Detroit 3 years ago by teenagers who wanted to rob him. One was convicted of 1st-degree murder and the other two plead guilty to 2nd-degree murder.
And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,
- A 20-year-old Detroiter was shot to death in his car by 7 Mile Road. Detroit police recovered several types of bullet casings at the scene.
- A man went to Detroit to purchase a used car. When he showed up, the two “buyers” pulled out guns and shot him multiple times, stealing all of his money before they fled. The man survived and helped police with a detailed sketch of the two thugs; both around 25-30-years- old.
- Detroit police are searching for a suspect in a gas-station shooting where a 45-year-old man was shot but survived.
