Why Should You Choose Hungary for Travel Among European Countries (by Bence Szokoly)

Hungary is one of my favorite countries in the world. It is no wonder because it's my home Country so I kind of have to like it. Well, yes but I like it anyway even though I don’t live there anymore.

Hungary is in Central/Eastern Europe and the capital is the famous Budapest. You can learn more about Budapest in my other post. There is a lot more to see in this beautiful country apart from Budapest, one of the other highlights is Lake Balaton which is a huge lake surrounded by amazing scenery in the north and the south. It is great fun to visit Hungary in summer as there a lot of things to do. For instance, eating Langos which is basically a flat fried bread dough topped with sour cream, onion and a lot of garlic is a must. It is a traditional Hungarian, old-style street food (very beautiful with lots of filling).

When I am in Hungary, I spend most of my time eating as it is my favorite hobby. I am really passionate about a lot of cuisines in the world and Hungary is no exception. Everybody knows the famous Gulyas soup but there is a lot more. We eat a lot of meat, specially breaded and fried and served with good home-made mashed potatoes. Definitely make sure to prepare yourself for eating and digesting hard because we just love heavy and greasy stuff. Probably not the healthiest cuisine in the world, but nobody is going to get hurt after a few hardcore meals and it tastes so good.

So, yes eating is one of the main things to do here, but there is more. Hungarians also like drinking Wine. There are a lot of nice grape fields with wine cellars. You can go for an organized wine tour where you can taste the best white or red wines of the country accompanying with some great cheeses. It’s a really good way to spend a day or an afternoon in the countryside.

If you are a more active kind of traveler, you can go hiking on one of the trails among the endless hills of the country and experience the beautiful scenery.

Hungary is an ideal destination for a few days or even a week, you will see a lot of nice places and you will save some money as it is still cheaper than most of the European countries.

I am a Hungarian guy currently living in Spain. I have lived in London for over 5 years, but a few months ago I decided to move to Spain in order to see the sun for an extended period of time of the year (unlike in London). I love it here, the food is amazing, I could talk about just the food for hours. And of course, the weather is much better than in London, I can wear shorts and T-shirts in November, how great is that!
